A foundational design exercise.
Black and white newspapers were sliced up and sorted to form a 5-step tonal palette. This palette was then used to create a collage that replicated the shifting values in a greyscale image.
In addition to replicating the range of values, a mix of cut and torn paper was used to mimic the different formal qualities in the image – e.g., the clean, architectural lines vs the fuzzy, organic forms of the trees in the backdrop.)
